  • Applying patterned material to multi-poly object

Hi, I'm new to this forum but have been using VRAY4SU for a couple of months now. Great tool btw

I have a question on material mapping. If I have a multi-poly object, a sphere or a cushion for example and I try to apply a patterned material to it (using bitmap on Diffuse), the pattern does not 'flow' from face to face but rather repeats itself anew on each new face. Is there a way of mapping the pattern correctly?

    Thanks v much!

SketchUp doesn't have very good UV mapping tools. You can project a texture on to a complex surface, and you can use the texture positioning tools to try to get the texture to look right, but aside from that, you're probably not going to have much luck. I think there are some UV mapping plugins for SketchUp, but I don't know how well they work, or if they will handle complex geometry well, but it might be worth looking in to. I would suggest heading over to the Sketchucation forums to find those plugins.

Thanks Djendig. Im trying out a couple of plugins to see if they will solve the problem.

Is this something that Rhino is better at? Or would I need to move to 3ds max? Ive only ever used sketchup so some clarity here would help.

      Thank v much

in sketchup, try right-clicking on only 1 surface that has the texture. you might have to turn your hidden geometry on to do this. you will see an option to show the texture as "projected". This option might get you what you are looking for but because it is wrapping the texture the same way on all sides, it sometimes doesn't look right. hope that helps
