material ID (sorry for the crosspost)

I just saw this post on the vfr section, and it reminded me that I had wondered the same thing before. Is there a way for material ID to not be visible behind transparent objects? I've run into the same issue as Renee (but am commenting here since I can't post in the rhino forum.)
