    thanks Andy for your reply
Ive got lots homework to do. Im pretty inexperienced in importing Obj files into SU. Ive tried downloading free sample Xfrog trees in Obj. When importing with TIG's OBJ importer pluggin. I choose with textures but no textures are mapped. I had a look into the downloaded free sample xfrog folder and notice there is a mtl, obj and lots of tga files which i presume are the textures. How do you import obj files?

when you import a vrmesh, no material info comes with it, only mesh information. The mesh has uvw info, and it knows how many material were applied to it when it was converted, as well as which of those materials was applied to each face. It has no clue what your material settings were though.

If you have a model in SU, and you export a vrmesh from our toolbar button, you will be able to retain material information within that scene only. When you try to use that vrmesh in another scene, it won't have any material info associated with it, and we will just generate random materials. If you get a proxy object set up with the materials you want, save it out as an SU component so you won't have to mess with material settings again. The material info and proxy info will life in that component, and will be brought in to whatever scene you use them in.

Except as it is now, the materials will be gone from the component file unless you apply the materials directly to some faces within the proxy group. SU doesn't currently have a way to save the materials if they go into a new file....

the multi material should be attached to the proxy object, which should then bring the other materials along. Is this broken? If so, can we please get a bug report about this if there isn't one already?

Yes, I reported this a while ago. I got a note back that this is fixed (8446) but I'm not sure that it is.

Actually, it does bring in the materials as listed in the vray proxy material, but they are not in the sketchup materials list.

okay, thx for submitting the report. It sounded familiar, but I haven't worked on it yet.

OK, had a chance to check, the proxy export from Blender does not depend on having vray standalone installed. The material ID order can be seen in the Blender outliner, so there's no needing to guess about the order of the proxy materials.
