  • Can't get a material transparent

    Hello
I have now start to use Vray 3 for Sketchup but one problem that I have notice quite fast is that I can't get transparency on the materiel in an old model even if I set the opacity for the material to 5 in the sketchup material editor. Does anyone here know what settings I need to change to get transparency?

Check to see if Use Color Texture as Transparency is ticked on under Diffuse.

I am also seeing that there is no link between transparency in a SU material and the VRay opacity of the material. On purpose maybe? Doesnt seem to make sense.

I havve tried to change both transparency and multiplier but neither of them makes the material transparens, is it another setting that I have missed?

Please note that the Opacity and Color parameters of SketchUp's Material Editor are not adopted by V-Ray and will only be reflected in the viewport. Rather only the mapping of textures through SketchUp's Material Editor will translate to V-Ray.
If you have imported a material created in an older version, enable the 'Linear workflow' option (Asset Editor > Materials > V-Ray BRDF > Layer Options > Linear workflow) to assure that the material renders the same way as before. This option is for backwards compatibility.

You are also welcome to experiment with our Preset Material Library.
In addition, transparency is controlled from the 'Refraction' dialogue

I tried that but it didn't help, do I need to make a new material in the vray editor and then add that to all surface?

What are your settings for the refraction tab? Is the refraction color white? If so could you share a simple model with the material? The vray preview also shows it isn't transparent.

Wish setting is it that I should change?

You can move the 'Refract' slider to make the material transparent, but this might not produce accurate results.
Try using a preset material from the Material Library, which you can fine-tune to your liking, and you will get much more accurate renders of a glass material.
Note that some of the preset materials use 'Fog Color' to give the material its tint/color, which accumulates based on volume size. Experiment with the 'Fog Multiplier' values (even as low as 0.001) to increase the transparency of the material and not have the tint/color overcome the whole material.

Does the glass have thickness? Is the glass material applied to both sides of the faces?

Have made a new material now, will experiment a bit with the different settings.

It's applied on both sides of the material.

Your refract color is black, this should be white (drag the slider to the right).
This should make the material transparent.

Nope, V-Ray doesn't have an option to set thickness for the glass so it will use the thickness of the geometry object it is applied to.
