  • Problem with displacement

    Hello
I try to make a realistic roof but can't get displacement to work for the material even if I have it in a separate component. I have displacement on under settings, any other settings I can have missed?
If someone have any tip on making a better roof I'm happy for ideas.

    Hi,

You said that displacement surfaces are components. Well.

A couple of things to verify:

Are surfaces "white" or "blueish"? I mean, when watching in monochrome SketchUp style. They must be "white", you must keep the main surface oriented to the displacement direction.
Are displacement switch (in settings-> switches-> geometry-> displacement) on?
It can be a matter of displacement texture map size.

    regards.

      Yes
map size in sketchup is 305*305 mm, this is the displacement map I use.

        Hi,

It's a matter of relative dimensions of roof bitmap and displacement bitmap. Must have the same relative dimensions.

You can test this on the roof texture

1.- Duplicate your roof material (right button on Asset editor) and select this new material roof#1 in Asset editor
2.- Create a new diffuse layer above BRDF
3- Assign your displacement bitmap to this diffuse layer.
4- Select transparency to white (or select a color map on opacity to white) on this new diffuse layer
5.- On SketchUp material change dimension of this new material. As you said 305x305.
6.- Select Objetcs in scene with original roof material
7.- Apply new material to selection.
        8.- Render

Save and close file and open file again. It should appear on SU materials

If I save the file the new material disappear from the Vray material editor.

It seems to be a bug. But anyway, create a new material with the same settings of your roof material and try to do the steps above except duplicating. Let's see if works, it must.

Even I do something wrong or it doesn't work, this is the result. Yes, the displacement map is shown as the material in sketchup, probably because I used it as diffus or is it another reason?

Maybe displacement amount is too low, try to increase. Think about difference between black (0,0,0) and white (255, 255, 255) in displacement bitmap in inches and put this value in displacement value. Test values 18 or more to test and see what happens.

                      Hi vicke50,

I rendered a simple scene using your displacement map and it works as expected.

Can you share a simple scene with your roof geometry so that I can test further.

                      Thanks in advance,
                      Konstantin

Strange, that's how I want it to look like. Made a new model just to try but still didn't get anything.

                          Hi vicke50,

You can check the following option (the global displacement switch):

The option should be enabled in order for any displacement in the project to work.

And again, if you share the scene it'll be a lot easier for me to find the issue.

                          Regards,
                          Konstantin

That switch is on, here is the complete model.

                              Strange things happen with disp.

First of all, I've made a rectangle 10mx10m, white face up.
I've imported a bitmap (the roof displacement map in this post) over the white face of rectangle.
Modify this roof material adding the same map to displacement (amount 20 for test)
Group rectangle surface and border lines
                              Render.... no disp effect

WHAT????? WHY????? I don't know. Until yesterday I did it like that. It worked for me in previous versions and I think with this release as well.

I made another rectangle same dimensions
                              Grouped surface and border lines
Applied roof material to the group (from outside the group)
                              Render..... WORKS!!!!!

I used this first method for years because it's the easiest way for adjusting textures on surfaces.

I tried again applying several materials on surface from inside the group keeping the roof disp bitmap, and disp geometry is still working works again, but I can't easily adjust the disp map position

It seems that disp bitmap affects only to the group for geometry, but not for materials from inside the group. I don't know if this is the way to do it from now or a bug.

                              Tested with W10, SU 2017 and 2018, VfS 3.06.01.

                              Regards.
