  • Textures as external files

    Hi,
I am making large model In SketchUp for CGI purpose. SketchUp file without textures is ~20mb. After applying textures file size increases into 300mb (during auto save, SketchUp freezes for approximately 2 minutes). Is it possible to use external textures from outside SketchUp file? Or how to deal with this problem?

    Hi,

You could change the preview for the high resolution textures to a "Texture Helper" from the Binding tab for these materials:

Name:	Texture Helper.jpg
Views:	156
Size:	152.4 KB
ID:	977219

To know which material that has a high resolution textures, go to Sketchup material window, click on model material button, expand the details button and choose "Save collection as", and save it to a folder, the you could navigate this folder and check the file size for these materials.

Name:	Save collection as.jpg
Views:	78
Size:	121.4 KB
ID:	977220

If you want to see the preview for the high resolution texture for presentation purposes inside SketchUp, create a new diffuse layer and add a small resolution texture (You could use Photoshop to do that) as a bitmap.

    Hope this helps.

Also, make sure the option to turn off the model thumbnail updating at time of save (model info, file, uncheck "redefine thumbnail on save"). You'd be shocked at how much this speeds up save time

Thank You! "Texture helper" is exactly what I am looking for!

PS. turning of "thumbnail redefining" is also good tip
