  • Animated Short Films: V-Ray Next with 3ds Max/Maya vs. V-Ray for Unreal

    Hi,

I am debating doing short animated films in Unreal. However, I am not clear on the advantages of using V-Ray for Unreal in the Unreal Engine versus simply using V-Ray Next in 3ds Max/Maya. If I have 4 powerful GPUs, would I gain a render speed advantage using V-Ray in Unreal versus using V-Ray Next in 3ds Max/Maya? What is the attraction to using Unreal when 3ds Max/Maya GPU rendering is so fast already?

    Hi Jabba!

It's very clear. No more render time. That means, you don't need any CPU based renderfarm anymore. Or even GPU Based Workstations.
Even so. The GPU based Render is already much better. Was running latest tests on my Ryzen Threadripper 2990 WX 32 Core Processor 3.0 GHZ.
    Vray Next is fantastic!

    @animations
that's where the big difference plays a major role.

That's why you want to have Vray Unreal - because you don't need any expensive renderfarm anymore.

That's how I see it - and that's why I just invest in two things anymore.
A Nice Workstation + great GPU power. Two GPUs' in one machine - yeehaaa!

Vray Next is really fantastic. Now... I am just hoping to have all the same major features available in Unreal.
If the dev team will get this done - woooooopaaaa.....

Awesome it is - yoda would say!

    hope that helps!
    cheers!

      Hi bernhard,

I agree that VRay Next significantly reduces render time, thereby mitigating the need for a render farm. However, my question is about VRay Next for Maya/3ds Max vs. VRay for Unreal. Is there an advantage using VRay for Unreal over VRay Next for Maya/3ds Max?

The way I see it, VRay Next for Maya/3ds Max is extremely fast. Given this, what is the advantage of VRay for Unreal, other than the ability to render in Unreal? Is it faster to render with VRay for Unreal in the Unreal Engine than rendering with VRay Next for Maya/3ds Max?

        Hi JabbaTheNut,

V-Ray for Unreal uses the same core as V-Ray GPU Next for 3ds Max, thus there won't be much difference in render speed. In the case of doing an animation project, I would recommend to use the DCC that allows for flexible animation editing. If you have already started the project in UE, or if you are planning to use assets from the marketplace, you may consider using V-Ray for Unreal. You can also migrate assets from one V-Ray to the other via vrscene files. Again, consider which DCC is going to provide you with more artistic flexibility and choose that one. V-Ray will do the rendering whatever you choose

        Best regards,
        Simeon
