  • How to enable Glass material with reflections? (standard glass)

    Hello,
I realize that refractive materials aren't rendered in my scenes.
    Is there a hidden setting?

(to check I've created a testscene in 3dsmax, to be sure that it has not to do with the test asset I'm using.)

Attached screenshots of Vray Render in UE, viewport in Unreal engine and 3dsMax render.
Also the stone material has some soft reflection, which is not happening in UE.

    Thanks for looking

    Hi BeneZ.

Can you please check the IOR parameter of the material that has been imported? We set it to 1.0 when importing a refractive material because the distortion that it produces is not very realistic and when you have a window for example you will see some artifacts. Change the IOR number to 1.6 and try again.

    Best regards,
    Alexander

Thanks, I will test it out today.
(I remember now, I have seen once somewhere a short tutorial, that explained that refraction problem in UE)

The second problem is the missing reflection.
Even whe you look at the bricks, they look like a pure diffuse.
Or the reflection in windows or reflection of the sky on top of the sphere, that you can at least see in the UE viewport.

p.s. my next aim will be to import a character with eyes (that look "real" in 3dsMax).
Do you think, this will be already possible? Thanks

Just made a quick test - still not rendering refraction and reflection.
IOR is set to 1.45 (like set by myself in 3dsMax) and 1.6 in the asset (default) and also what I can see in UE.
(I always tested two different glas shaders in this scene)
Also checking those boxes makes no difference.

Can you please send the scene to test it?

                Hi BeneZ

I have looked into the project. I misunderstood that you used a VRayMtl for the glass but instead you used an Unreal created glass material (imported from datasmith maybe). There was a bug that was causing the issue and it has been fixed. You can render glass properly when we release the next update which will be coming very soon Here is how the scene looks now after fix:https://ftp.chaosgroup.com/support/s...Refraction.jpg. That strange smearing on the edges on the spheres are caused by the fresnel expression plugged into the Refraction input. If you plug just the Refraction IOR parameter the result is this:http://ftp.chaosgroup.com/support/sc...9_10-41-22.jpg

                Best regards,
                Alexander

                  Hi Alexander,

very great to hear, so it was worth the trouble

Yes the elements were all selected exports with Datasmith.
Datasmith seems to me sometimes easier, when I only want to export parts of the scene, es pecially when comparing shaders (Because vray scene exports the full scene).

I will check it out then (I'm currently learning in special landscape softwares and come back then again to this topic and in UE4.25)

                  All the best!
                  Bene
