  • Testing Next GPU - Impressions, a couple glitches and a crash

Hello! I'm testing GPU Next to see if I might want to upgrade my 3.6 license and start to invest in more GPU hardware. First off, the progress your team made is really great. I love the hybrid mode and being able to use my Threadripper and my 1080Ti. I'll probably be getting 2-4 2080 Ti's shortly if all goes according to plan.

Anyway, I did notice a few things I thought I'd mention. Apologies if this isn't the appropriate format\venue:

    - GPU IPR doesn't seem to update when switching away from a camera. Is this just me? If I goto perspective view from a camera or create a duplicate camera (ctrl-v method) and then hit 'C' to switch to the new one it doesn't seem to update.
    - If I turn on or off Cold/Warm lens effect during a bucket rendering it seems to leave black buckets until the rendering finishes in the effectsResult channel. Not a huge deal.
    - Lots of times IPR seems to restart the first time I zoom in the IPR window.
    - I got a crash during a bucket hybrid rendering of a super simple scene. I saved the minidump but am still looking where to submit it...I should know where by now, sorry! It's 15mb so a bit large to email to support.

I do miss BerconTiles (I use it on almost every project), LightMix and a material preview similar to Corona\Fstorm. I realize the second two are not GPU specific comments and all three have been mentioned a lot. Otherwise...pretty slick!

    Cheers,
    Daniel

I think the lack of BerconTiles support is what's keeping a lot of people away from GPU rendering. It's a biggie!

Yeah it’s kind of a sleeper but once you don’t have it, ouch. It’s a hangup with FStorm as well since it only uses its own native maps.

im also testing the latest next gpu demo, seems good, the displacement is much improved.. but i get unhandled exceptions when trying to render in bucket mode.

V-Ray GPU warns you if you use buggy drivers. Before everything, make sure that there is no message in the log about that. NVIDIA driver 418 broke many CUDA apps. 417 should be better.
Beside the automatic check that V-Ray GPU does upon start and prints in the log, you can also see the recommended GPU driver version here https://www.chaosgroup.com/vray-gpu

You can use the Max problems forum for bug reporting
Bucket mode works nicely here, so make sure to make a thread and upload a scene for support, so Devs take a look

I have this problem too and have reported it many times. Is there any progress on this issue?

                1. Camera switching in IPR should work fine. Can you send me a scene where it doesn't?
                2. It really doesn't seem like a big deal, but it's annoying. We'll check it out.
                3. Zoom and restart - we are aware of this issue, but I can't reproduce it with the latest builds.
                4. Scene and dump to support please
                5. BerconTile - I will raise its priority in the list.
If it was that easy, it would have already been done
