Is there a general rule of thumb to achieve the same (similar) results between the 2 render engines with Vray Displacement? When simply switching from Vray Next to Next GPU the results are completely different (ie. GPU is not the preferred result). Possibly in my current case it may have something to do with the size of the displacement image (world topo image 21600x10800 px)?

The 2 engines are not supposed to match 100%, the GPU engine was written from scratch and optimized for GPU hardware. Bump mapping, SSS and many other things won't look the same
You need to decide whether you will work with CPU or GPU at the start of your project.
But I think that GPU displacement looks really nice, maybe a test scene or screenshots will be helpful in your case.
