  • 3990x cuda performance

i was very excited to test out the new cpu in vray. according to the benchmark i get 556 msamples in gpu render with the cpu only. .. which is more than my two titan x'es together at 443.

however that does not seem to translate into max. i have a simple scene, but with layers of transparency in it, which takes about 38 seconds on my two gpus. on the cpu (cuda) it takes nearly 3 minutes!

not what i was expecting at all.. especially since in normal vray, the scene (with a couple of tweaks to correct the visual difference) takes about 30 seconds a frame on my cpu.

This seems similar to my disappointment with my new 3950x, which I also thought that even combined with 2 cards would be quicker than the chip alone - but sadly not.
I know they are different renderers but I didn't even suspect the difference would so large so as to make CUDA in any flavour pointless to use, for me anyway.

what i dont understand is how vray benchmark, which is supposedly an accurate representation of performance in vray, can show my cpu as such a cuda monster, when in max, its not that impressive compared to a pair of antique gpus.

vlado, did you get a 3990 for testing yet?

also note ive now tested on a few very varied scenes.. the abovementioned simple motion graphics scene with flat colours and layers of opacity, an exterior with lots of trees and forestpack, and a minimal interior with ies lights. in all cases the cpu is TONS slower than my two gpus.

it would be great if somebody from chaosgroup could explain the discrepancy between the vraybenchmark result and the max result. hopefully the max version can be brought more in line with the benchmark results and not vice versa!

the silence is deafening! seems its not just the 3990 which renders much slower in max gpu than benchmark gpu...
