  • Is multitasking scenes possible with GPU?

It's hard for me to think about how exactly GPU is more efficient compared to a farm... Is it something where you can send a job to the GPU renderer but then work on the next job? Or do you need to sit and wait for it to complete before moving on?
I have 800+ product renders that I'm working through. Even though each one is taking 20-30 seconds prep on the workstation, and 10min on the farm, I'm able to keep moving through them. Supposing I had a dual RTX2080Ti setup on my workstation, how might that get me through these faster than what I'm doing now?

You can get cheap small GPU to run the display while the 2080Tis render.
Or you can have an extra workstation computer to do the rendering, replacing the farm, and hopefully that is cheaper.

For some people these solution work great, for some less so.

Got it. So it does sound like you can have a render going on the 2080Ti's, but continue working on other scenes with the GUI GPU?

i dont think you can render and work on the same machine, that would be asking for trouble. if you have a farm however, stick a couple of gpus in one of the farm machines and send the job to that.

wether its faster than your farm, youd have to test.. do you not have one decent gpou there you can test on?

You can render and work on the same machine but you’ll want to disable the gpu used to drive the display for your renders, let the other GPUs handle that. I do this sometimes, the only issue is if you’re using the light cache as this is still processed on the CPU so you might notice some slowdowns in your app while this part of the render is being calculated

Running 2x2080s here for GPU rendering and a 1080Ti for monitors.. I use standalone for rendering final images, and the machine is usable for any other work or even gaming.
There are no issues with that
