  • VrayToonMtl has no effect on final render

I seem to be having some issues regarding the VrayToonMtl on 3ds Max 2019.

When I start a new scene with a teapot and a Vray sun with standard render settings and a vray exposure control. The toon material seems to have little to no effect when rendered. Ie. does not render high contrast black and white.

Does the Toon material only work if GI is turned off?

Are there specific render settings required to get the material to appear.

    Hi Uday.

The material works also with GI enabled. It depends on the effects you want to achieve.

The V-Ray Toon Mtl results depend on light and shadows. As in real life, if you want strong shadows, you add a direct light source in a dark place or black box.
Otherwise, the indirect light from the environment also affects the object. If you make tests from different angles with no V-Ray Sun position change, you'll see different color results - Toon effects.

If you want an appearance close to the high contrast image (without GI), it’s better to use no Environment Map (V-Ray Sky Map), but only color - black. Then you’ll receive other soft effects and the image won’t be as flat as without GI. You could also try with different background colors (no Maps) for different results. Decreasing the Intensity multiplier of your V-Ray Sun will change the render too.

I used three different V-Ray Toon Materials. Here is the scene to check it out: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ZRn...HNHyKwjY8/view

Attached is also a screenshot from the Material Editor.

In this video, for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_c...ature=emb_logo GI isn’t enabled.

It may be familiar to you, but I’ll share: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9HN...8R&index=1
Here an interesting result is shown using additional maps and different color combinations in the Diffuse Ramp.
