    is it possible to switch from cpu to gpu for these?

    You can select which one in the render dialogue/common tab.....don't think it works though - at least it doesn't appear to be any quicker with swatches

      somewhat works but not with VRay - in cpu and gpu modes swatches are rendered on cpu.
      also “custom sample object” functionality within mat editor is something I would prefer to avoid.

        Yeah exactly, you can physically change the option but it does nothing, so a good case for it being greyed out imo. Would be great if it worked I guess, but then it would still be problematic,
        with gpu being a different render result for stuff and some things not working, like translucency.
        Back to native then

          turns out custom sample object in 3ds max is also rendered on cpu.

          so should I just abandon the idea or somebody knows how to make it work?
