  • VRayDisplacementMod + World Z-Axis falloff map

I'm watching a tutorial where he uses a falloff map set to Distance Blend and World Z-Axis on a plane displaced in the Z direction with VRayDisplacementMod. I'm trying the same on a more recent version of 3ds max and V-Ray but it's not working. Can somebody confirm that this is no longer working and maybe suggest a workaround?

    Thanks

Could you share the tutorial and the desired result so we can have an idea of what you're trying to achieve?

Thanks. It's this tutorial here ..

From 8:50. He sets up a Falloff map as a mapped Source Map for a Gradient Ramp and sets it to Distance Blend and World Z-Axis. It seems to work for him, but I can't even get it working on a simple test with a sphere.

To be honest, I don't think it works for him either - the returned color is a solid one, whereas it should be following the gradient colors. There seem to be discussions about Falloff's Distance Blend with World XYZ not working in other CG forums as well. I've tested it with Scanline and Arnold and can't seem to make it work. It is likely an Autodesk issue. However, there is a workaround - using BerconGradient, which has a "Distance" gradient type based on world coordinates. BerconMaps (up to 3ds max 2021; for 3ds max 2022, link posted here) are available in the Misc Tools section of the technical documentation

Thanks for the help. I'll try out BerconGradient.
