Use GPU for cpu rendering

Is there still a plan to have the GPU be able to render on the CPU engine? I know you can have CPU help out on GPU engine + CUDA side, but can the GPU ever be setup to help out on the CPU render engine? Ive got a 3990 cpu, and I love it, but I rely on a 1080ti for viewport etc since I dont need a fancy GPU. As prices change, and GPUs evolve, it will make sense to upgrade soon, but my decision will clearly be affected by whether the GPU would ever be able to be used on the CPU rendering side.
