Nope; you don't need a special graphics card for that (any card would do), however you need a special 3d monitor. There are several companies that offer interlaced/checkered 3D LCD monitors and projectors.

Vray RT could use natively quad buffered opengl drivers (or the 3d vision option for non quadro cards). Checking normal stereo option (side by side or left-right, it's the properly name) could use 120hz monitors to see in realtime the 3d stereo image with Nvdia lcd shutter glasses.
Now I have to create the left-right render, save the image, open stereophotomaker or stereoplayer and choose flip page mode.
Chaos could be the first company to implement this option in a rendering engine. 3DS Max can run with quad buffered active, it doesn't use this option for its 3d geometry, could be used for the 3d frame buffer instead.
Immagine now to output the stereo realtime image on an external 3d tv full hd at 1920x1080 pixels, having a client that sees in realtime a 3d scene with 3d depth perception.
It's like a science fiction.
best regards.

We have this marked, but it could not be done in time for the release; right now you can simply use any of the other available systems (dual projectors, interlaced or checkered systems). Double-clicking inside the stereo preview window of V-Ray RT will maximize it on the current desktop where the window is located, so you can keep it running on a separate monitor or projector in full screen, while working inside 3ds Max on your main monitor as normal.
