  • RT on OpenCL based FPGA devices?

    And no, not Caustic hardware

Anandtech just posted this article and it got me thinking about the applications for RT ('cause I can't count on my amd cards ;D). Wondering if the Chaos Group team's looked into this? A few comments on that article did mention a limitation due to the cache/module and the integer orientation of the work units, but being in OpenCL I'm curious if these Altera cards would be difficult to make work with RT. If so, how screamingly fast? =D

No, we haven't looked into them, but you are welcome to try them out However, something tells me that if AMD can't get this stuff right, there's even less chances for these guys.

    Best regards,

I think these projects are mostly to get some bigger fish attention (like Caustics, Ageia, etc..). Otherwise they are pointless. The biggest problems are: 1) you need tons of hardware and software resources (like Intel/NVIDIA), 2) you need a mainstream product to get it cheap for production (like CPU/GPU). Like Vlado said, even AMD are struggling...
