  • Vray RT & Forest Pro

I'm having trouble I need to use a texture on grass so it shows the grass with the texture like painted on. I talked to Itoo, they said that Forestcolor shader it is not supported by RT GPU. So they gave me a workaround, but found that that doesn't work either. The work around was just to use the texture in bitmap. This is what they wrote below.

    "Hi,

The only way I can see to do this at the moment that works with V-Ray RT is to use Planar from World XYZ mapping coordinate system. I prefer to use real world map size and then in that way you can easily position the texture using the bitmap map's Size and Offset parameters.

To see the results in the viewports you will probably need to turn on Display Realistic materials with Maps but to help get an approximate position I also find the the Surface's X position minus half its X size gives me a good starting point for the Width > Offset value, and a Y Position minus half the surfaces's Y Size works for the Height > Offset.

    I hope that helps."

But it doesn't work, RT GPU seems not to support that type of mapping or something. They ran out of ideas and suggested I contact Chaos Group. Any ideas how I can get this to work in RT?

Can you post a scene with a simple setup so that we can take a look?

Sorry it took a while to respond, I have been using vray 3.30.03 Final version for rendering now. For some reason I cannot get the texture to lay on the grass and render in Vray RT GPU using just bitmap, it works in RT CPU. A lot of us use Forest Pro and with the amazing speed of GPU and a lot of us moving over to the GPU, this really puts a stop in production. I cannot find a way to use or get variance color or textures onto the Forest Pro and render with RT GPU. Itoo has been helping in the forums but they say they need your help to figure this out. Below is a scene I attached simple but shows the issue, you can change back and forth from RT CPU to RT GPU to see the problem. And for some odd reason RT GPU is taking a year to render it.

Has anyone had a chance to test this out yet?

Any one? This is still a major issue we cannot finish the project with.

Seems like the size and offset of "Use real-world scale" are not working in RT GPU when the mapping is "Planar from World XYZ". Thanks for the pointer !
If it was that easy, it would have already been done

Any Idea of a workaround. This is pretty huge problem, is it hard to get the "Planar From World XYZ" mapping to work on RT? Coding wise?

Actually Blago fixed it 4 minutes after I reported it, so it will be in the upcomming 3.30.04 with other small fixes soon.

Oh that is so awesome! Is it in the nightlies? I have access to the nightlies, but for some odd reason when I go to the nightlies there are a bunch of folders with dates on them but they are all empty, is that normal?

are you guys (apart from this issue) finding forestpro usable with rt gpu? every time i try to do a typical forest scene with a handful of detailed trees, it maxes out my (32gb) cpu ram in the leadup to starting the gpu render. this is with a smallish forest that only uses 6gb to render normally.

I will notify you when it's in the nighlties and you should contact our support to see what's wrong with that empty folders.

We are working on the memory issues, I really hope a solution is found soon.

That's odd, I haven't had a problem yet, I'm using a Titan X though. What is your hardware? I have noticed something weird though in the rendering progress dialog it shows to use way more ram in GPU RT mode than in Vray ADV. I'm suspecting this is a bug of just the display, hopefully it's not really using that much. As an example with just one of my scenes below:

Vray ADV - Memory Used P:6492.9m

Vray RT - Memory Used P:11155.7m

Anyone know whats going on here?

that empty nightly access folder thing happened to me recently, i requested a fix and was told that new policy was to allow only stable builds for commercial customers. you could try asking very nicely.. thats what i did

that is exactly the issue im talking about. you wait till you try and do some heavy forest stuff.

i have a titanx too. its nott he gpu ram thats the issue, its the cpu ram. something to do with compiling the forest geometry for use on the gpu.. it puts a MAJOR limit on the complexity of models you can use with forestpack on rt gpu, and AFAIK, means forest is not actually really "supported" yet.

this issue has been around for ages and i dont know how anyone manages to use forest at all with GPU... i guess maybe with simpler source models it works ok.

afaik there is currently no fix.

This doesn't sound good, I have 3 large projects coming up that will be heavy with forest. Can someone clarify if this is an issue being fixed? Forest Pro is a necessity for most of us.
