  • render elements and gpu

amongst several issues which still stop me from doing full jobs on gpu most of the time, the biggest issue, one which stops me 90% of the time, is the undeveloped render elements.

the two issues which have come up in the last 3 jobs i had:

multimatte does not work within vrayblendmtl, so no mattes for sub materials

no" affect all channels" option for refraction, so no mattes through transparency (also no denoiser through transparency)

just those two issues alone have the post guy here refusing to allow gpu jobs. if he doesnt have mattes, he cant do post work. for animation, rerendering multiple times to get mattes is a ton of work and cost which is unacceptable.

there are many other render elements which dont work, and the matte system behaviour is "interesting" too.

    trace sets dont work properly...

still loads of unsupported maps (although those i can generally work around)

id like to ask, since id consider these matte things "critical" features for any serious production work with post involved, when are these issues going to be fixed?

im about to buy a new workstation and i need to know wether to spend the money on cpu or gpu power. "its on the todo list" isnt quite enough to convince me gpu will be usable in the near future. such a shame cos the speed is intoxicating, and withe the RT cores due to come online soon, even more exciting.

next update might have sorted render elements?

      Hi,

The GPU engine features support is updated with each new release but unfortunately there is still many work to be done in order to cover all of them available in the CPU one. We can definitely use your feedback to prioritize things and make them a bit faster into the builds. Hope to have some news to share soon.

yeah sorry, i hate to be yet another person complaining that gpu isnt the same as CPU, and i hope it doesnt sound like one of those posts. i dont expect all the maps and plugins to be supported etc -its a heck of a moving target to keep up with. , these can mostly be worked around by rendering to bitmaps etc...

however when it comes to multimatte and render elements, these are pretty much essential for any modern renderer, and not having them working in a few very common scenarios just kills usage for me.. i keep thinking "this job im gonna do fully on gpu" and ive only managed a couple start to finish in all the years gpu has been available.

"Render Mask" does not work for animation either as there is no option to "Clear Previous" under GPU.

The RAW elements are critical to me and are lacking in GPU.

No worries , this feedback is very useful for us and this thread is becoming The most wanted GPU features.

Actually we have it in the nightly builds now (Max script option only) and most probably will be part of the next major update.

Our GPU dev team is aware of that and I'll let you know when we have any progress.
