  • VRay GPU Stereoscopic *show stopper* bug?

Has anyone tried rendering a left-right stereo frame using VRay GPU lately?
I get instant Max crash the moment the render is finished, even on simple scenes with a teapot and a light.

Using the latest Vray Next, update 2.1 (4.20.90.29583), with latest Max 2020.2

    Anyone else?

    Thanks,
    Greg

Attached is a simple scene illustrating the problem; load and render away.
Basically, this will crash Max the moment the render finishes.

For a weird reason it crashes on every render resolution selected, except 640 x 480!
    Hope this helps...

On the same note, VRay Stereoscopic Helper doesn't do anything when rendering with VRayGPU.
I have to use only the Stereoscopic rendering parameters on the Render Setup Settings tab, which crash Max every time.

        Anyone?
I'm stuck here, as going back to CPU is not an option as i get 40 min per frame, instead of 6 min per frame using GPU.
Running out of options, as default Max's Stereo Assembly Camera tool, doesn't seem to work with Vray GPU either; only renders the center camera through the Batch render dialog.

Edit: One way to bypass the show stopper bug, is to render a still with GPU, re-project that on the same geo and render with CPU in stereo...

          Hello,

I'm trying to reproduce the issue but with your scene, the same Max and V-Ray version I get no crash.
When Max crashes - it must create a crash dump - 3dsmax_minidump.dmp located in your temp folder (type %temp% in the Windows explorer address bar). Can you share it ?

What is your GPU and what driver version are you using ?
Can you try just for the test to render with only the C++/CPU CUDA device ?

          Best regards,

            Hey Yavor...

            Thanks for looking at this!
I just checked that scene here at the office and i hate to admit but i got no crash here either!

Must be something on my PC at home then, where i'm using an RTX 2080Ti, with 436.48 nVidia drivers.
I will investigate more when i'm back; i do get a warning though about the driver, been newer than the "recommended" one.
But, the crash only happens after the rendering is finished and the moment Max comes back.
I will check for that minidump as well..

            Thanks so much!
            Greg

Attached is the minidump from the crashing pc at home.
Also, crashing all the same, using only CPU CUDA device.

Edit: No luck with any version of VRay. Maybe something to do with my nVidia DCH driver?

Hope that minidump throw some light as the reason behind the constant crash.

                Sorry for the delay.

According to the crash dump - the crash happens inside the VFBPlus plugin - maybe it doesn't handle the fact the resolution doubles ?
Can you try to remove it and see if the render still crashes ?

                Best regards,

Alright, thanks for the heads up!
I will remove that tonight and try again.

But, i do use the same plugin in my PC at work and i get no crashes there with the same scene; weird.

                    Hey Yavor...
                    Thanks for the help.
Removing VFB+ fixed the crash; no idea why, as the same setup in the office doesn't crash and works fine.

At least i can work away now...

                    Thanks again!

                      You are welcome

You could send the dump to the VFB+ developers and they might be able to tell what is the problem.
