  • GPU rendering crashing on NVidia RTX 4000

    Hello;

    I'm working on a huge scene animation in 3DS Max, it's an industrial plant with terrain mapped with satellite photos.
    I can't use the GPU rendering it always crashes weither in use CUDA or RTX. It seems to crash during the bitmaps loading
    My machine is a Dell Precision with an NVIDIA RTX 4000.
    I can't share the scene, sorry it's "secret" and it also weights 800 Mo.

    I'd like to have the benefit of GPU to accelerate my rendering.
    Thanks for help.

    Hi Daniel,

    Do you get any error messages or warnings in the log window? Would it be possible to at least share the log file, so we can inspect and see if we can find something that hints where the issue lies?
    Are you having any issues rendering with CPU? If it does crash when the bitmaps are loading, could you try using an override material to check if bitmaps are, indeed, the cause?

    Moreover, make sure to update your GPU drivers to the latest recommended ones, and give it another try.
    To find the log files, type %temp% in your file explorer and look for recent vraylog files. You can either attach it here or forward it over to support@chaosgroup.com - make sure to mention this thread in the email along with exact V-Ray/3ds max versions. Thanks!

      Hi Nikoleta;
      My NVidia drivers are updated to last available version, same for V Ray plugin.
      I can't give you the result of the log window as 3DS Max crashes and doen't give me time to read the log window.
      I attach to vray log file to this message.

        I made a test with the same scene and all geometry ppassed to a standard material grey without texture.I meet the same issue.

          You can try to isolate which object is causing the crash and then send it.
          If it was that easy, it would have already been done

            I can't accept this answer for a soft i paid about a thousand euros.
            Yes sure !!! There are about 1000 objects in my scene i will spend 2 days isloting them and test rendering ??? That's fine i have nothing to do except debug your soft !!!
            We can find many post on the internet about regarding this issue. Except please send us the scene and the log you do not have a real answer. This issue appears to be pending from a long time.

              Well, how do you think we can debug your scene without you sending it? We'll be glad to debug it ourselves and I can assure you it will remain a "secret". If you insist we can sign a NDA, but the process might take a while and I don't know if you are in a hurry.

                A rendering software can crash for numerous reasons. Bad geometry, unsupported textures/materials, hardware issues, user mistakes and of course software bugs. As seen in your log there are a lot of warnings, so indeed without having a look at the actual scene there is no way of figuring out what's wrong.

                  I really can't send the model so i'll manage myself. The log file doesn't give any clue ? I'll will try to decrypt the warnings in the log file.

                    From what i read at the end of the log files it seems to crash just after loading the HDR lighting map :
                    [2020/Nov/10|08:10:20] GPU tex loaded sky (idx=0) mip 0, w 765/765, h 765/765, channels 4, 4572KB
                    [2020/Nov/10|08:10:21] GPU tex loaded epping_forest_02_2k.hdr (idx=1) mip 0, w 2048/2048, h 1024/1024, channels 3, 12288KB

                    Any idea what should be the next step because it might not have been recorded by the log.

                      Have you tried monitoring your VRAM at time of the crash?

                          Hello

                          I think i found the cause of the issue : V Ray dome light with HDR map.
                          I attached a 3DS Max scene for you to debug.
                          I can't send you the HDR Map file because it's over the upload authorised size.

                            Load the HDR through a VRayBitmap and not from OSL:HDR Environment. OSL maps are not fully supported in V-Ray GPU.
