  • Vray RT performance

    Hi everyone,
I came back to vray recently and I'm considering to buy the whole suite soon.

I'm just concern about the RT performances, more in particular:

On small scene it amazing, pretty fast and responsive.
But when the scene start to have consistence it start to slow down considerably.
Every time I move the camera it start again the render from scratch, and so it takes some time to reupload evyrything

    Sometime it doesn't render stuff.
I stop and restart the render but keeps to not show them up.
Switching them off and on again sometimes work, in other occasions I have to restart max.

If I put a displacement everything slows down.

I get that I can't expect a real time, but neither waiting a minute after any change in the scene.

I'd rather prefere to have a slower final render to have a better and performance with RT.

Right now I'm using default render setting, is there anything that I could do to improve the RT?

    Thanks in advance,
    Lorenzo

    Do you mean vray GPU?

It is good for small scenes, product stuff and instagram content and for doing volumetric passes.
If you are professional and deal with VFX, arch vis or complex scenes you will need to stick with Vray CPU or switch to Redshift which performs far far better on similar scenes and lacks the horrible GPU lag that vray has - but is not ideal if you have a Vray based pipeline of models and materials.

Even with a 3090 its not great compared to a 3990x - invest in CPUs not GPUs as they offer better bang for buck

The caveat is that its 'free and bundled with vray cpu' so it really suffers from a lack of development, feature parity and love, despite the prices going up a lot this last year. This is unfortunate but is a common issue you will see on every forum and facebook group. It looks like Lavina is now the priority along wuith Vray CPU for Chaos and without a roadmap we can only feel that it is getting sidelined.

I would like to see it decoupled from Vray CPU and either made a proper product - or removed completely

This is exactly what was on my mind to suggest. It is extremely confusing for the unwary.
In my view it falsely represents what Vray as a package is and should be separated, to make it clear that it is a different
product and needs to approached as such, with its specific capabilities and shortfalls.
I am literally constantly tripped up by its seeming ability to do what I expect, only to discover that sometimes the simplest of things does not work.
Again, in my view, there is little point in advising us to only use gpu if we have started a project with it and continue to use it for that project, as 99% of the time any
given incompatibility will only be discovered deep into the project - so it's a bit of a guessing game and mostly just frustrating and a time-waster.

There is no story....cpu is gonna be at least x5 slower than gpu.
Machine was assembled in april.... don't want to but a threadripper now

            Guys,

As always, please provide scenes so our developers can profile where the lag is coming from.

I've pinned a thread more than a year ago requesting for scenes that take time to start and so far nobody sent anything - https://forums.chaosgroup.com/forum/...pu-for-3ds-max
If it was that easy, it would have already been done

              Hi Slizer,
sorry about that, it wasn't done for lazyness the thing to not send the scene.
Before to send it I wanted only to be sure if it was something known already or if was unusual.
It was actually done to save you guys some work for nothing maybe

                Lorenzo,

There are countless combinations of what you can do in your scene with all the features, 3rd party plugin, user approach .. so this why we ask for scenes. The more you sent, the quicker we will eliminate the problems.

We are aware that there are problems. We have a dedicated GPU team that works only on V-Ray GPU related stuff, so saying that V-Ray GPU is not a priority is simply not true.

                  I understand,
I only didn't attached the scene because of coming from other supports, where I was told off because I haven't checked other stuff first.

The fact I didn't attach the scene was to save your time and not to waste it looking for something that maybe is known.
But I see your point, I'll attach the scene asap.

I didn't say vray gpu is not priority.
Actuallyi'm glad to hear you have a dedicated team ✌
