6k render aborting

I have an issue with certain files aborting the GPU render. Can anyone help me figure out what I can do about this? Here are the screenshots of the messages.
The renders have no problem at 3000x2000 but they abort if I try to create a render 6000x4000.

Hi story_garvie,

Seems like you're running out of memory, have you tried monitoring your VRAM while rendering? Can you let us know the GPU specifications? Other than that, you can check our article on Memory Usage Optimizations for GPU Rendering here.

VRAM never gets above 6% on the first card, stays at 0% on the second. I have two older NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti cards.
