  • Rendering with RTX or CUDA goes out of memory

    Hi everyone,

    I'm working with Rhino 7 and V-ray 6.

Is there a way to tell V-ray to not go out of memory with RTX/CUDA renders ?
While rendering with CPU, we can check the box "Out of memory", and the rendering will start even if it takes more time to initiate it.
Is there something similar with GPU ? I saw that this option is available on V-ray for C4D in the system parameters. I have troubles with some scenes that goes out of memory, my render does not initiate. I also tried the option "Out of core - WIP" but that doesn't seems to work well.

    My config is :

    CPU 16 core AMD rayzen 9 5950X
GPU 12 Go Nvidia GeforceRTX 3080 TI
    RAM 64 GB

If I add some RAM, I'm worried that V-ray will still use everything disponible and crashes anyway.

    Hi gaston lobet

There are so many issues with vray gpu, i use vray gpu 5 for sketchup.

The issues are very serius and very important, as you already said you are having problems with vram.

If you dont work very claver and very clean you are not going to be able to render.

right now i cant use the rtx engine because it is taking so much vram even a lot more than cuda...so these issue needs to be adressed.

If you render a scene and then you render again the same scene with same settings vray gpu is going to take more vram and then a probably crash.

the rtx engine with vray fur and vray hair material Takes so much vram that is almost imposible to use it because it Takes really really a lot of vram.

Algo i would like to say we havent see any kind of speed with vray gpu.

For example i would like to Hear from chaos group what is the stage about cáustics with vray gpu, are we going to see it at some point?

If it is going to be posible to see caustics for vray gpu?

They are very important for spaces

      Dear gaston_lobet, hello.

In order to be more helpful please define the following:
      1. are you experiencing this issue in all of your scenes or in specific ones
      2. are they made with previous versions and migrated to V-Ray 6 or created from scratch with V-Ray 6
Here are listed some tips for optimizations while using GPU rendering. Mainly the extended need of VRAM could be caused by using V-Ray Fur or Displacement in large areas without setting optimizations.
But at this point we could only guess what your exact situation is.
Since we are still working on GPU improvements will be highly appreciated and beneficial if you share a simple problematic scene via our contact form to test in our environment and take into account the specifics of your workflow.
The best way to collect the needed information and assets is by using Extensions > V-Ray > Pack Project.

      luisgamino2, thanks for joining.
Let's keep the caustics question for another thread since it is not related to the initial inquiry shared here.

But still - Muhammed_Hamed could jump in too and share thoughts about future improvements.

Wishing you a wonderful week, all.

        Hi tsvetomira.girginova

I read in the forum While vray 6 was developing, that vray gpu team wants to bring support for vray enmesh for vray gpu.

If i have to tell you the truth well we need more important things that vray enmesh. These option is not going to resolve any kind of issues that we already have since vray 5 and is still there for vray gpu 6

Of course i still like vray gpu, but is sad that we almost dont see real things that you say...finally we are leaving issues behind.

5.2 for vray gpu in sketchup was a total disaster, vray gpu crashed so heavy even with light scenes

Two sided material is still at a half, why the múltiply by front diffuse is still without support.??

some render elements still without support for vray gpu.

I believe if i do a test with vray gpu 5 and vray gpu 6 im going to find the same issues and almost the render with the same quality.

Please, please, bring really esential things for vray gpu 6 for the update 1

i never use vray cpu, i only use vray gpu.

Another point while vray cpu users can use bump for the edges textures for cóncave and convexity 2 different bump for one each other, well for vray gpu these still not posible, i talked with konstantin in the first days of vray 6 beta, so important for architecs and designers

With vray gpu you have to assign the same amount for both... we need further controls for vray gpu

        Thanks.

          Hello tsvetomira.girginova,

          Thank you for your answer.

1 - I'm having this issue of memory in specific scenes. As you said, those scenes have indeed some displacement and fur activated. I've already read how to improve those scenes, but I need to render it anyway. It's a bit disappointing that fur and displacement cannot really be used...
2 - Scenes weren't migrated from a version to another one.

            Hey gaston_lobet

Please take a look at my post for some tips on managing GPU memory

Using progressive mode, Cuda mode and HW accelerated GPU scheduling should help a lot

            Best,
