Failed to compute OptiX denoiser memory requirements. Error Code : 7001

I have two 4080 cards 16gb. (hey by the way does RTX use more memory than say 1080Ti's/Cuda?)

i'm trying to render a still frame image from 3ds max 2022 (Latest version of v-ray & nvidia drivers 531.41) render size is 12800x7200px.

is this why i'm getting the error? i tried 9600 x xxxx px and didn't see that error.

    1) does it denoise anyway just with CPU? i don't really notice it, it's an exterior render and it's smoothing out as passes pile up (432 passes right now)
    2) msi afterburner is showing 6835mb on my primary card where two monitors are plugged in and 4661mb on 2nd card. i'm a little suspicious though as neither of those have changed at all as the render goes on (maybe that's something i never noticed before?)

i know there's option for i think for selecting a card for denoising? i'll have to read up on that and why/how it works.

    thanks!

edit - here's what i mean by "i don't really notice it, and it's smoothing up as passes pile up"

this is only 496 passes in these screen grabs and it's 100% crops. looks pretty clean to me.
