  • GPU Maya impossible to render animation

Hi, our experience with GPU and Maya. Try our 4th animation to render, and we had to give it up like the other 3 times. Its impossible. We have two RTX 3090 with Nvlink, no memory issues, no texture issues, nothing about hardware we guess, everything good on logs and stats.

Just a lot of bugs or erros. We can render any frame we want, if we try to render an animation, second frame gets stucks. Seems like it doesnt leak good the memory. Is really annoying. Really bad experience with GPU here, and we did invest a lot of money on graphic cards.

    Thank you.

If you are rendering animation, is it from maya interface? Are you using mayabatch rendering at all? I would suggest trying render manager approach, which is the best way to render animations.

We have tried through vray command line and through maya interface. Both was impossible. If there is another approach just let us know.

I would recommend thinkbox deadline (now called amazon deadline) They made it free I think as a render manager its very good. Similar to backburner, you can manage your render jobs via its interface and integrated submitter will allow you to send your jobs to deadline. I've rendered many sequences with it (most cpu) but a lot of gpu as well.

Ok, we will try it. But I think it has nothing to do with a manager. We do render cpu animations without a problem, and Gpu just got crazy. Sometimes it renders 5 frames in a row, other ones just one. But it always changes, sometimes get sticks with lightcache, sometimes loading bitmats, sometimes preparing kernels, sometimes viewport in maya gets sticks if vray gpu is selected in render settings… is really annoying to work with gpu and vray in Maya. Seems not to be a production pipeline ready to go, but a really buggy piece of software.
          Thank you

We ran many tests with gpu and conluded there was not benefit for gpu vs cpu rendering. Even if in some cases it was faster, in a bigger picture the versatile cpu always wins. Also cpu's especially faster ones are just as fast and powerful as gpus. It really is just apples vs oranges kind of situation.

Interesting, Certainly for large Landscaping projects GPU is not a working for me, Just not worth it. With a 4090 I mean. GPU seems the be a life line when your stuck, I am talking Max not maya.

Hi, thanks for posting. Is this issue happening in every scene or only in a specific one? Have you tried to re-install V-Ray and Maya? Have you tested without the NVLink?

Is not every scene, it depends on i dont know what. Currently we send to render a sequence to GPU and can only render 9 frame sin a raw. When it get stucks we change and send to render next frames and again it can just render not more than 9 renders in a raw. Is time consuming and really annoying. With CPU no problem.
                  Just really frustating.

We havent try without Nvlink, but doesnt know why it should be the problem.

If you are sure in this and have tried all the basic stuff (reinstall, drivers, etc) please send us one of the scenes that is causing issues. You can do that here or use the support contact form. Please include a link to this thread in your e-mail to support.
