  • RT Render Server Errors

How do I setup the RT Render Server as a registered service so I don't have to start it up manually each time ? When I do this with the supplied link I, the RT ActiveShade window hangs at "loading image data", and there is an error when I start up the RT Render server manually (on top of the registered one): can not open listening port ( 10048 ).

When I don't have the Render Server registered, and start it up manually, everything's OK.

This error ( 10048 ) means that there is another copy of vray.exe already running in server mode.

On your local machine, there is no need to register the render server as a Windows services - the RT client in 3ds Max will start it automatically.

If you do want to register it as a service anyways, make sure you use a regular user login for the servrice to run with (right-click the service, choose "Properties", "Log On" tab, check the "This account" option and enter proper user name and password for the machine). This is because, by default, the service runs with a system account, and this prevents it from communicating with the 3ds Max render client on the same machine.

Note that you only need to do this on your workstation, there is no need to do this for a dedicated render server machine.

    Best regards,
    Vlado

Do you get this on a simple or empty scene? What do you get in the command-line window with the RT render server?

        Best regards,
        Vlado

It is a simple scene - just a teapot... i got past the error and now i just see a black viewport with "waiting for image data..." message

i check the process and i see all 8 cores at 70% load on the vray.exe process so somthing is working but no updates get to the viewport

and i can't see any command line window - is it suppose to automatically pop up when i start activeshade?

Did you register the V-Ray RT render server to run as a service?

            Best regards,

I did, but for some reason it doesn't start on it's own - i had to go in the services list and actualy start it... IT WORKS NOW!!!

Thanks Vlado, I'll go to play with the new toy now

Ok then; make sure you set the properties of the service so that it runs with a regular user login on the system; otherwise the 3ds Max RT plugin and the render server will not be able to exchange data because of different security rights.

                Best regards,
                Vlado

Hi Vlado, even though initially i managed to work with VRay RT i now keep getting the same error and nothing solves it.

When running the Server command line application i get an error "Failed to open listening port 10048"

                  What should i do?

Check if there is another instance of vray.exe already running in the Task Manager (don't forget to turn on "Show processes from all users"); if there is, then the render server is already started.

                    Best regards,
                    Vlado

If you registered the V-Ray RT render server, unregister it, and leave the "Auto-start local slave" option on in the V-Ray RT settings. Just in case, clear any render servers listed in the dialog. Then start the ActiveShade to see if the local server is launched automatically. If there are still problems, please email me to vlado@chaosgroup.com and we'll try to solve them.

                          System cannot execute specified program

I set up RT fine on my host machine and erything is perfect. I ran the setup on two other machines as standalone render slaves and then point the serveer to the correct port and location to my machine. Then I click the V-Ray RT render server to run it. In the dos prompt I get a message saying “System cannot execute specified program”. And then shows me the path in which the program is installed; "C:\Program Files\Chaos Group\V-Ray\RT for 3ds Max 2010 for x86\bin". Can you tell me what is wrong with this? My IT guy was here for an hour trying to figure it out.

                          Thanks,

Do you have 3ds Max 2010 installed on those machines? If not, you may have to install the Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 SP1 runtime (available from http://msdn.microsoft.com). Alternatively, you can email me to vlado@chaosgroup.com for a V-Ray RT installer that includes the correct Visual Studio runtime also.

                            Best regards,
                            Vlado

I do not have Max2010 installed on that machine. I will try that tomorrow and/or the MVS 2008. Thanks, Vlado!!
