  • Vray RT keeps running forever

    Hi,

Would it be possible to somehow limit how long Vray RT keeps running? The vray.exe process takes up 100% when I leave my computer and keep doing so forever it seems, at 100% my computer takes more power and my electrical bill will be bigger, that is not good in these "green" times. Maybe limit it to 1min or whatever from the last update.

Yep, someone requested that, so it is on the to-do list. In the meantime just close the ActiveShade window when you no longer need it.

    Best regards,

Need better CPU usage efficiency, please

I strongly second this request. When V-Ray RT is updating the ActiveShade window, I can understand that CPU usage for all of my PC's cores is at 100%, but when the image "settles", all cores are still at 100% for as long as the ActiveShade view is active. The CPU temp jumps 20 degrees Celsius in just a couple of minutes. Ironically, the CPU usage plummets sharply when I'm rotating the scene in my working perspective view but then goes back to 98% to 100% when the V-Ray RT engine kicks in again to refresh the scene. This is fine very short-term but questionably practical long-term.

I remember nearly frying my computer once by letting SETI@Home run for a few hours with the default of 100% CPU usage of all cores. Needless to say, things got hot really fast. The PC's I build are usually nice and quiet, by design, and I'm not exactly joking when I say that I would prefer not to have to install loud leaf blower fans to get the temps back down. As it is, in addition to the CPU fan, there are four 120mm fans, albeit "quiet" ones with good airflow for the dB level.

Yes, I'm keeping the ActiveShade window closed until I need it. Hopefully the V-Ray gods can figure out a more efficient way to keep the CPU usage down when nothing significantly intensive in the ActiveShade window is being refreshed, without a noticeable performance hit when you DO want immediate response when there is significant activity requiring a refresh of the ActiveShade window. That's the catch-22, I guess, so if it can be done, our equipment will thank you!
