Thanks Vlado. Could you clarify what you mean by regular login? I am logged into the machine as administrator but i still need to right click and run the spawner as administrator. Is there a recommended set up for a Vista based render farm?

    Thanks!

Well, you can try disabling the User Access Control, if possible, and see if it helps.

        Hi,

After disabling UAC, I can now start the DR spawner without saying "Run as Administrator", but it still results in the same problem of missing textures. One thing I dont understand is if only the slave has a permissions issue, why does the client stop rendering the textures as well?

I did some further tests and it looks like a licensing issue more than a permissions issue. Or at least, I have a licensing issue thats preventing further debugging.

        Here is what I did.

        1. Uninstalled Vray completely from the slave.
        2. On the slave, I installed Vray SP4a and RT SP4a as Workstation (full) and said the license is on the remote machine. Gave it the IP address of the client machine.
        3. Installed Vray SP4a and RT SP4a on the client machine. Attached the dongle.

Here are the issues I encounter on the slave machine:

        1. Starting Max and go to Vray tab. All tabs are disabled and Vray says cannot obtain a license. However, I create a box and render in Vray and it renders just fine???
        2. Check that the slave can see the license server by going to http://client:30304 on the slave. It shows license is free.
        3. Clicking Launch Vray License gives the error "Code-Meter or WIBU box not installed".

Both machines are Vista x64 SP1 with Max 2010 x64.

        Whats going on?

        Thanks.
        Burzin.

What kind of error code do you get when it says "cannot obtain license" in the user interface (there should be a number in brackets after the error message)?

            Hi,

I dont think there was any error code, but I'll check that in a minute. Need to reinstall SP4.

Currently, I installed SP3a and it got rid of one issue at least. The slave can now see the client in workstation mode. The dongle is attached to the client but the slave shows all tabs and renders fine with SP3a. DR still shows the same missing textures.

            So the current matrix is:

            1. SP3a - Slave or client can run in workstation mode without any errors with dongle attached to client. DR shows missing textures. UAC on or off makes no difference.
            2. SP4a - Slave shows a license error in workstation mode with dongle attached to client, but can still render simple scenes without errors. DR shows missing textures. UAC on or off makes no difference.

            Thanks.
            Burzin.

Ok. More progress. I uninstalled SP3a from the slave and installed SP4a. Slave and client can now render fine in workstation mode with dongle attached to client. Now going to install SP4a on the client and see if that breaks the slave.

Also, one more thing which may be important. I noticed that the Common Files->Chaos Group folder still had the vrlclient file after I uninstalled. So I deleted that file. That may be what caused the SP3a(client) and SP4a(slave) matrix to work. Doing more tests.

Ok this is getting kind of exhausting. Here is my current situation.

Vray SP4a installed on both machines.

                  Client:

                  - Has dongle connected.
                  - On installation, choose local license server. Uncheck Vray license service.

                  Slave:

                  - No dongle connected.
                  - On installation, choose remote license server. Give IP of client.

Workstation renders render fine from either client as long as distributed render is not checked.

                  Vray License Service:

                  1. Start Vray License service manually on client. Starts fine.
                  2. Start Vray License service manually on slave. Does not start and gives error "Codemeter or WIBU-KEY runtime system is not installed". Thats it. No error codes or anything. I cant install the WIBU drivers because choosing remote license server during install doesnt give me that option.

                  Vray DR Spawner

                  1. Starts on client without needing to right-click and "Run as Admin"
                  2. Does not start on slave without right-clicking and doing "Run as Admin"

                  Distributed Rendering.

                  1. Using client as primary and slave as DR machine gives correct textures for client pieces and missing textures for slave. Everything used to be black before so this is one step ahead I suppose.
                  2. Using slave as primary and client as DR machine. Shows correct textures for slave and misisng textures for client.

So now what? I am out of ideas. I dont think this is a Windows problem...?

I have gone through the manual, and the only thing that I can think of which I might be doing wrong is that I havent run a backburner job like it says. Please let me know if you think this is causing the problem because I really dont want to go through the maze of figuring out backburner if it is not going to solve the issue. We dont use it at all otherwise.

                    Thanks.

Well here we go again. Back to the black screen and now I get another error, this time with numbers, when I launch the vrlservice on the slave. Vlado, I have emailed that to you.

                      Thanks.

i did not reall all the posts, but did you try disabling all firewalls and antiviruses. Win firewall can cause some issues and most of the time its disabled, or you have to set exceptions.

Has anyone any closer to working out what is happening here?
I have one machine that picks up the textures ok from the server and one that doesn't:

The one that works runs Vista 64, Max 2010 and Vray SP4. I manually start the RT server and all is fine
The one that doesn't runs Win 7, Max 2010 and Vray SP4a. When I manually start the server I get the error "Failed to start network server. Failed to open listening port (0)".
Both machines have full admin rights

I'm only running the demo before I commit to buying it for everyone here...
                          Any thoughts?

Do you have another copy of the V-Ray RT render server running (for example, if you registered it as a Windows service)?

                            Best regards,
