Which build?

Which build of RT should I be downloading for running with VIZ2008........and will it work OK seeing as it's now an old version?

Is it penry....the mild mannered janitor?

VIZ does not have the ActiveShade feature at all, so you will not be able to run V-Ray RT with it, even if the plugin itself loads fine.
