  • Environment Override Gamma

VrayRT doesn't appear to be respecting the Vray Environment Override.

Attached is an example of a proper test render and the RT output.

The background is a plain .jpg in Max environment.

In both of the Vray Environment Overrides, I have HDR maps in there for the environment override and reflection override. The proper gamma does not seem to be applied in RT with the Reflection Override (sea teapot reflection.) I cannot tell right now if the Environment override is respected.

Actually, I think I know what's happening. RT uses the Max Frame Buffer - is there any way to get it to use the VFB instead???

Not right now; we have to stick to the 3ds Max ActiveShade window for now.

So "burning in LWF" still technically doesn't work as the people who rely on the VFB are not going to see the results. That sucks. I was really hoping it would have been working this past SP.

If I want to use RT, then I'll have to completely change my workflow methods.

No, it should work fine (in V-Ray SP4a + V-Ray RT SP1a); V-Ray will adjust the gamma of the ActiveShade window to match that of the V-Ray VFB:

(*) If you are using the V-Ray VFB in the production renderer, and its sRGB option is off, V-Ray RT will remove the gamma correction from the ActiveShade window even if you have the gamma enabled in the 3ds Max preferences.
(*) If the sRGB button is enabled in the V-Ray VFB, V-Ray RT will also apply a 2.2 gamma correction to the ActiveShade window.

If you have a scene where this is not working, you can send it to me at vlado@chaosgroup.com so that I can fix it.

          Best regards,
          Vlado
