Ok, so I tried to find some answers to why Vray and Vray RT sometimes differ quite alot in appearance. I found some threads discussing the issue but they strayed off into "gamma land" and left me even more confused. So I did some investigation and found the following. I'll try to let the images do the talking to avoid confusion. But the basic guideline to sync up vray and vrayrt seems to be to leave "linear workflow" unchecked and since it seems to have no effect on the vray rendering whatsoever this shouldn't be a problem.

A couple of things to think about:
- Do comparisons between activeshade and max's own vfb first. Since they should always get the same gamma treatment. What's right or wrong is a separate problem.
- Observe that png-files gamma value is read inversely, when using the option "use images own gamma" (works correctly in RT though, very confusing). It also creates problems when saving png files, so do your comparisons in max with the vfbs open.
- Switching the gamma settings in preferences can cause the individual images gamma settings to change ("use images own gamma", "use system default gamma" and so on...).
- Don't trust the activeshade to update correctly. Close it down and reopen after you change settings to double check.
