  • RT GPU starting properly but window remains black

    UPDATE 04-04-2011 Problem solved

    Delete the clbin in C:/users/***/AppData/Local/Temp/

Stats (yellow text in the right upper corner) shows a working engine but activeshade window remains black. If I change something in the scene, stats updates, but image remains black. If I switch to CPU RT, it works fine.

Specs are Vray 2.00.02, max 2011 x64, quadro 4000 GPU

A mate of mine did the test with the same scene, same setup (GPU etc.) and did worked fine.

I'm puzzeled by this issue ...

Here'a a screengrab of the problem.

What happens if you change the background color? Do you see a change?

    Best regards,
    Vlado

Nothing happens, even after a restart of the server and activeshade window. I've also tried a Vray color, or a Vray Sky as environement, does work in RT CPU, nothing new in RT GPU

Ok then; does it work on a very simple scene (sphere and omni light)?

        Best regards,
        Vlado

Did you see something if you use perspective or standard camera instead of physicalCamera ?

Thanks for your help. Unfortunately, still no image with simple scene and perspective view, or standard cam...

Have you tried also a standard camera, rather than a physical one?

              Best regards,

I'm having the same problem it seems. RT GPU has worked fine in the past, but not today. No idea why either. CPU works. GPU gives me a black screen. I deleted the .clbin file, restarted the machine, tried with a simple brand new scene (just a box and sphere). I'm really puzzled. Any help would be really appreciated.
                Thanks!

                [edit]
I am seeing a number or error messages in the render server window.
                "Error -36 at line 1716 , in file ./src/ocl_tracedevice.cpp !!!"
                "Error -36 at line 915 , in file ./src/ocl_tracedevice.cpp !!!"

It lists these two errors several times. Maybe this is helpful? I'll try reinstalling RT and see if that helps.

ok... reinstalled Vray and updated Nvidia drivers to 267.xx and still the same issues. Stumped.

Yes Vlado, I tried with a standard cam and it doesn't work.

Thanksfor you input John, I'm not alone in this... May I ask what is you GPU model ? Mine is a new Qaudro 4000, as I mentionned, a friend of mine has an equivalent config and it work perfectly.

I'll try a new nvidia driver and a Vray reinstall, but I don't think it'll help.

I've got a new GTX570. So odd that it worked just fine one day, and a few days later it doesn't. Philippe, have you been having any other issues with your GPU at all? I have been experiencing some artifacting in the max viewports here and there. Spikes in the geometry and some strange purple bands over a particular color (this even happens on my windows desktop). I'm wondering if my card is either under powered or over-heating. A couple days ago I took my box outside and blew it out real good with the air compressor and canned air. There was quite a bit of dust in there, so maybe over-heating was an issue, however I haven't really been using 3dsMax much in the last few days to draw any real conclusions.

No issue at all, the card works perfectly well otherwise, fortunately !

If you looking for good third party cooling solution, try Accelero XTREME Plus This is just insanely efficient and yet perfectly quiet. A bit expensive though.

Have you tried deleting the .clbin file in your temp folder after installing different drivers?

Hmmm....well... I don't think I deleted the .clbin file after installing the new driver. But... for whatever reason, RT GPU seems to be working once again. I guess you could call this some kind of "inadvertent user error"... Somewhere I must have triggered some kind of unhappy emotional state in Windows, Max, or Vray and... well... I guess I've been forgiven. I wish I had some clue what I did to cause it or solve it. Oh well... not the first time it's happened and surely won't be the last!!
