  • Lightbulb in RT won't allow shadows

Ok let me first off start with I'm still new to the whole vray/rendering business. So if this question is rather foolish pls bear with me.

Currently I'm trying to render a simple scene lamp on the table with a transparent lightbulb and a light inside. Vray RT shows the light inside the lightbulb and it hits the plane beneath it but as soon as I enable shadows for the light the whole scene becomes black(no light gets through).
    Hope somebody can help me.

you will need to check "affect shadows" in your glass material

Hey jacksc02 thanks for the reply. But sadly the option "affect shadows" was on from the beginning in my glass material. I now managed to actually see my light source within the glass but nothing will come through.

        is refractive caustics on?
Also what type of light are you using? a vray light or a max light?

I'm using a vray light. Actually I think I tried a bunch of them. I'm not quite sure about the refactive caustics option sadly I'm not near my work pc right now and I can only double check it again tomorrow.
On a sidenote: Wouldn't it work with max lights or would the settings be different?
          Cheers,

What happens if you turn the light multiplier up 100x? You say the "whole scene turns black". Do you see the light even?

              Select your light bulb glass
              - goto object properties
-turn off Gernerate shadows so the glass won't cast shadows

              Cheers

Thanks for all the replies. It was what 3DMK suggested. I forgot to turn off cast shadow. Man I feel stupid now. Again thanks for the help.

Mmmm another question which is kinda related to the problem I had. Does VRAY RT has a problem with different IES profiles/or different light sources in general? The difference I get between RT and adv render is miles away from each other. Same goes for photometric and VrayIES. The result in RT is usual pretty dark but when I render it the whole scene is way too bright.

Well seems like I have to avoid using those then if I want a reliable preview in vray rt.
                      Still thanks for the answer.

Sorry for double post but I just found this under supported features for vray RT:
V-Ray lights: VRayLight (Plane, Sphere and Dome types), VRaySun and VRayIES.

If I understand that correctly I must be doing something very wrong.

Tried to make several different scenes to see if I screwed something up. Even reinstalled Vray but currently no luck.
