  • Enable GPU Engine?

I searched but couldn't find the answer....I am trying out Vray 2.0 RT. Its working pretty well. I am running Max 2010, Win7 64bit and use an NVidia GTX470. Under the RT rollout, the "engine" is set to CPU and is grayed out. Should this be set to GPU? And if so, how?

I have a multi-monitor setup (4) and its pretty cool leaving the activeshade window open on one of my monitors!

The RT Engine type can either be CPU, or OpenCL, which is your GPU setting. If your OpenCL setting is greyed out, it means that your system is not yet seeing the GTX470 as a present OpenCL device.

Under the Start button go to All Programs/Chaos Group/V-Ray RT Adv.../Select OpenCL Devices for V-Ray RT GPU, and you should see your 470 listed (make sure you have the latest drivers from nVidia installed first). Select it as a OpenCl Device, go back to RT and see if you can now enable the OpenCL engine. Remember that the first time you use it, V-Ray has to compile a proper OpenCL file and that might take a little while.

Let me know if that helps...

If i recall right it is also greyed if you have an activeshade window open. closing the activeshade session should enable it in this case.

Yup it was grayed out because the activeshade window was open. Thanks. I saw your post after I upgraded my video driver just in case

Of course, now the activeshade window is black for some reason? It loads the vray plugins and says "Waiting for image data" but the window is black. I can production render the scene fine. But its not showing in the activeshade window. Back to troubleshooting! (Unless you have a suggestion...)

I hope the new driver didnt just cuase this (270.xxx).

I just noticed a "Vray Standalone has stopped working" crash dialog keeps popping up behind the Max window. Crap....maybe updating the driver wasnt a good idea.

If you changed the driver and the standalone crashes, try deleting the *.clbin file in your temporary folder (type %temp% in a Windows Explorer window to get there).

By the way, its much better quality (lighting, artifacts, etc.) in the activeshade window with the 270 drivers!
