  • VrayRT running out of memory, new issue since 2.20.03.....I think.

    Hi,

I get the fllowing error in the rt Dos dialogue. see below
It says there is a memory error, but the scenes that i am trying it on are not complex, or have rendered in the past. I am using the cpu rather than gpu because I only have one gpu, and the lag is a bit annoying.
Is there a reason why it is doing this?
I have never really taken too much notice of the dialogue as it has never been a problem in the past,
I am running 64 bit max, and have 12gb memory.

any help would be much appreciated

I'm running 2012 Max (all SPs and Hotfixes) with vray 2.20.03 now and it just started doing this as well. Works great for simple scenes but since the switch to the latest and greatest havent had much time to figure out what the cause was. The file worked fine before. Any ideas guys before I start taking this apart?
Happens while using CPU but GPU doesnt work with that scene either. Worked fine in the previous version of vray.

Sounds exactly the same. I just tried, and my gpu will no longer render scenes either.
Its amazing how hard it is to go back to old workflow without RT, test renders are not cool!

Need this sorted for my sanity...

I see that it tries to allocate a large chunk of memory, which seems wrong. Can you get me more specific reproduction steps and the scene to vlado@chaosgroup.com so that we can fix it?

        Best regards,
        Vlado

I don't have an immediate idea, if you can get me a scene along with instructions how to reproduce this to vlado@chaosgroup.com, it will be extremely helpful.

Thanks to both of you for the scenes; the cause seems to be the same: the meshes have some strange UV data in them (no UV vertices, but there are UV faces). I will get you a fix and we will update the build on a site a bit later on.

            Best regards,
            Vlado

I had a quick chance to check a few virgin scenes and basically any sketchup model imported into max 2012 with all the SPs and hotfixes running at 64bit seems to do the same to vray RT 2.20.03. I have found nothing that fixes the geometry so far so I guess the new build is the only answer so far. I've found other weird mapping issues with sketchup models in the past but nothing this bad. I used google warehouse models as well and same thing. I did find that if you export an FBX from sketchup then bring it back into max RT works but not a good workflow for new or existing files.

Seems like I'm encountering the same issue. I can render basic scenes, but more complex scenes will crash regardless of CPU or GPU mode. When ready, will the fix/patch mentioned above be available on the account page or somewhere else?

Yes, we will update the official builds. But in the meantime I could get you a build to verify if it fixes your problems.

Thank you sir. That would be helpful in my process of elimination. Please let me know what I need to do in order to access the updated build. My email: jeff AT jeffpatton DOT net

I have the same problem with an object converted from Lightwave (containing UVs). Is there any fix for it?

                      Thanks

There is a patch that Vlado will be able to email you. It helped with the sketchup mapping issues, but still dies on large scenes, even though i have large memory, and 2gb quadro gpu.

I had to xref a scene containing large urban area created in sketchup yesterdy, and couldn't get it to render in RT neither.
I tried clearing uvw maps, collapsing everything to editable mesh, but nothing will do ! What is sketchup doing to its meshes to cause so much trouble ??

There is an option in the RT settings whether it should render X-Ref'd scenes and objects - I assume you have enabled it?

                            Best regards,
                            Vlado

Yep. It works fine with the xref disabled. It's just that at some point I needed to activate it to make my test renderings. Anyway, I found a solution for now : I cleared the channels of every mesh imported from sketchup and now the xrefed scene renders fine in RT.
