  • Constant crash with CPU - how far is ATI GPU from working?

    Hi

I have an i7 2600K with 16GB ram and getting constant crashes with RT in CPU mode, this usually happens when I switch from active shade to production vray renderer. And usually because I cancel a render when it just starts or close the active shade window. Asif the CPU cant keep up with me cancelling and opening and closing windows.

I'm on an ATI 6990 with 4GB Ram. I'm hoping the OpenCL when finally working will give some relief in this area. Does anybody know if the OpenCL section of the driver is production ready yet, and if not, how long still? I'm due for an upgrade and need to decide between keeping the supposed "beast" of a GPU that I have, or getting an ATI 7970 or a GTX 580

It still leaves me with the original question - why does my CPU mode crash so often. It isnt scene specific, I get it with each project so much so that I'm ready to abandon using RT due to too much frustration and coffee
    Kind Regards,
    Morne

I will need some way to reproduce your crashes, so if you can post more specific steps (or even crash dumps) it will be very helpful to fix the problem. It looks like it is more of a problem of the translator portion, and not directly related to the CPU engine - in that sense, I don't think ATI support or getting a CUDA card will fix anything.

Max usually just hangs, I have to end task in proccesses to get out of it so don't get a crashdump
It seems to be an intermittant thing but, next time it happens, I'll let you know what I did and then I'll also try and reproduce it on my end...
      Kind Regards,
      Morne

          Is your 2600k overclocked?

Well, if Morne is too fast with the clicks to close the ActiveShade, it might be a problem occasionally. I remember we had some similar issue at one point...

I suspect something like this because it usually happens when I'm in a hurry. I do tend to "over"click at times
