  • Select OpenCL devices app crashing

    Hi,

I have dual GTX780Ti cards in my machine and am trying to turn one of them off. When I go to the Select OpenCL devices app it just crashes. I am running the latest stable build of vray for Max 2015 (3.00.08 ) on windows 8.1.

Any ideas why this could be happening please?

I have tried opening it as an administrator as well. No joy.

    Thanks.

Are you running this locally or through remote desktop? Have you tried updating the video drivers?

    Best regards,

Hi Vlado, I am running it locally. The drivers are up to date.

It is also happening on my render node as well. Windows 8.1 again. Also running local with latest drivers( it is brand new, only installed the drivers three days ago.)

      Cheers

Ok; does the RT itself work fine?

        Best regards,

Yes, it runs fine. In both node and workstation mode.

I installed Vray on my laptop this morning to see what happened and I get the same error. Windows 8.1.

          Hope this helps.

          Cheers

Bleh, I have Windows 8.1 here and all runs properly... what is your exact driver version?

            Best regards,
            Vlado

                I cannot reproduce it either.
What windows account type you are using?
Have you tried if the tool works with earlier V-Ray version like 3.00.07 or older?

Hi, I am running as an administrator..

No I haven't but I will give it a try when I get a sec.

Strange it does it on three different machines.

It is not a huge problem except on my workstation, it has two 780Ti's and I would really like to turn off the viewport one from rendering. Is there any other way of doing this?

I have no problems, with other GPU renderers.. Like Octane.

Yes, actually all that the tool does it set up an environment variable. I will have to check what is the exact format of the value that you need to assign.

Yeah, Octane uses CUDA only. ocldeviceselect, as the name suggests, uses the OpenCL API to get information about the GPUs and as you can imagine, nVidia does not care too much about OpenCL.

                    Best regards,
                    Vlado

Try setting up an environment variable called VRAY_OPENCL_PLATFORMS_x64 with a value of "{NVIDIA CUDA,GPU,0,1};" without the quotes (note the ';' at the end). The 0 and the 1 determine whether the first and the second GPU device will be used.

Also, keep in mind that you can always specify which devices to use for CUDA from the nVidia control panel.

                      Best regards,
                      Vlado

                          Hi,

I am having the same problem... intel E5520 xeon dual 2.26ghz, ATI Radeon 5870, nVidia GeForce GTX 970. I have uninstalled and reinstalled all openCL device drivers and latest updates to os (Windows x64 8.1).

Every time I open the "select openCL devices to use with V-Ray RT" app, it crashes / hangs. Have reinstalled V-ray several times.

Am interested in manually setting env variable, but not sure what format to add devies (currently i have three openCL devices - the ATI card, the nVidia card, and the intel xeon CPU)

using Geeks3D GPU caps lists all those devices, and the openCL benchmark tests run fine.

Do you know if any nightly builds have fixed this issue from 7 months ago?

                          Thanks!

                          Matt
