  • Select OpenCL devices app crashing - different person

    Hello,
    I can see there is second post about this issue but maybe reason of this behavior is different so I decided to create new post.
    Anyway, yesterday I bought Asus Strix 970 4GB hoping it will be helpful for quick rendering. My current configuration is:
    -Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit
    -3ds max 2015 64bit with updates
    -Vray 2.50.01
    -Asus Strix 970 4GB with nvidia drivers 344.16 WHQL
    When I run "Select OpenCL devices for V-Ray RT GPU" it crashes instantly not even showing available devices in window. It gives also two windows with error information - one after another. Please find attached screenshot.
    But OpenCL in 3ds max works when I render using it.
    I tried to use ocldeviceselect.exe in "Run as administrator" mode and Windows 7 compatibility - again, the same quick crash.
    I also uninstalled Vray 2.50 and installed Vray 3 demo - exactly the same crash happened.

    There is also problem with crashing rendering RT using CUDA, I don't know if problems are linked.

    Thanks for the feedback.
    We are still trying to reproduce this crash into our environment but without any success so far.

    Did you get the crashes after the hardware update or they persisted even with the old GPU device?
    Can you unplug the new GPU device from the machine and run another test with OpenCLselect utility?

    Thank you very much in advance.

      Thank you for reply Svetlozar. Problem still exist with selecting rendering devices but OpenCL RT rendering works. Previously I didn't test this feature - 480 GTX with 1.5GB RAM wasn't too useful for this purpose, so I don't know what the effect would be.
      Unfortunately now I'm not able to switch back to old graphics card.

        You can also control which devices are used for CUDA from the nVidia control panel.

        Best regards,

          Hi,

          sorry for cross-post - just replied to thread submitted by other uses with this issue.

          have you guys found any solutions for this? is there any information I can provide to help diagnose?

          I am having the same problem... intel E5520 xeon dual 2.26ghz, ATI Radeon 5870, nVidia GeForce GTX 970. I have uninstalled and reinstalled all openCL device drivers and latest updates to os (Windows x64 8.1).

          Every time I open the "select openCL devices to use with V-Ray RT" app, it crashes / hangs. Have reinstalled V-ray several times.

          Am interested in manually setting env variable, but not sure what format to add devies (currently i have three openCL devices - the ATI card, the nVidia card, and the intel xeon CPU)

          using Geeks3D GPU caps lists all those devices, and the openCL benchmark tests run fine.

          Do you know if any nightly builds have fixed this issue from 7 months ago?

          Thanks!

          Matt

            We had crash in Windows 8 and should be fixed in the next stable release.We haven't provided documentation about the env var (will make a point to do that).It is as follows :
            VRAY_OPENCL_PLATFORMS_x64={<opencl_vendor_name>,<o pencl_type>,<device0 on/off>,...,<device n on/off>};
            For example

            VRAY_OPENCL_PLATFORMS_x64={Intel(R) OpenCL,CPU,0};{AMD Accelerated Parallel Processing,CPU,0};{AMD Accelerated Parallel Processing,GPU,1,0};

            This will turn off all Intel OpenCLs and will use only the first AMD GPU (assuming you have two). The OpenCL vendor name for nVidia should be "NVIDIA CUDA" (so for example {NVIDIA CUDA,GPU,0,1}; );

            However, the OpenCL performance is not that great at the moment, so it might be worthy to try using only CUDA and nVidia GPUs.

              We have found that on some systems older versions of the OpenCL device app works fine.
              Until the fix comes out try one of the versions bellow:
