Hi, I'm getting some strange errors with RT.

I can render with vray normally. (Just a test scene with a sphere, so nothing complicated). But when I try and switch the viewport renderer to RT I get this error.

Also I seem to be getting a new error when I try to open the render settings for the first time after starting Maya.

# Error: line 1: MelError: file C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Maya2014\Python\lib\site-packages\pymel\core\language.py line 846: Error during execution of MEL script: file: C:/Program Files/Autodesk/Maya2014/scripts/others/createMayaSoftwareCommonGlobalsTab.mel line 48: setParent: Object 'commonTabColumn' not found.

After I see this error the "Vray Common" panel is blank, until I switch to another tab in Render settings such as "GI" then when I switch back to "Vray Common" the panel controls are back.

Are these related maybe?

This is most likely because you have registered V-Ray Spawner as a windows service.
Open Services window, find VRayMayaSpawner service and stop it:

or go to V-Ray for Maya folder in the Start Menu and click on Remove V-Ray Render Slave as a service:


Then Run V-Ray RT and test if it works properly.

According to the other issue you are facing with V-Ray Common Panel.
This issue could happen if Maya or V-Ray are installed on non-default location, like network drive and etc.
Are they installed on their default location?

I am getting the exact same symptoms as the original poster. Our Maya is installed in a non-default location due to the pipeline we run here.

How do you suggest I resolve the problems?

No, it is loaded from somewhere else.

We publish "packages" that change the Maya environment per-project so that we can revise jobs from a year ago and have those de-archived scenes be able to find all the scripts and plugins that they were dependent on a year ago.

The error

is due to the fact that the Render settings dialog of V-Ray is not added in original Maya's scripts. The normal V-Ray installation modifies the following script files :
createMayaSoftwareCommonGlobalsTab.mel
shouldAppearInNodeCreateUI.mel
unifiedRenderGlobalsWindow.mel

To fix this you can perform a regular installation V-Ray procedure on the same machine or another one that uses the same Maya/V-Ray version and then use the modified scripts to replace the existing ones in folder :
...\Autodesk\Maya2015\scripts\others
