  • Render speed increase when using DR only 25-40%

I'm using the GPU (GTX 980) of a 2nd machine via the Distributed rendering option but I'm noticing only 25-40% increase in render speed. I've tried different scenes and the figures are still the same 25-40%. The network is gigabit and both Vray versions are 3.5 Beta 1.

    Is this normal?

What if I were to take the GPU from the DR machine and put it on the motherboard of my workstation? Would that give me a linear speed increase of 100% instead of just 25-40%? Maybe there's limitation to the Distributed rendering which causes slowdowns when using remote GPUs even though the network is gigabit?

Do you have a 980 in the primary machine, and are you looking for a 100% performance boost and not getting it? Or something like that?

In any case, for RT DR you might try increasing the size of the Ray Bundle Size and Rays Per Pixel parameters. Not so good for interactive RT rendering perhaps, but may likely help RT DR performance as it increases the amount of information shared over the network per cycle and can speed up RT DR rendering. I hope it works in your case...

And yes, getting all GPUs in your primary machine wouldn't hurt rendering speed for sure, but RT DR should be quite usable if the settings are correct.

That was it! I increased Ray bundle size to 512-768 and it now uses almost 100% of the remote GPU.

        Excellent! Glad that it helped...
