  • Dual GPU's not working in Vray RT for Maya 2018

    Hello All,

I have have a gtx 980TI and a gtx 1060 in my PC. When I enable both in render settings for CUDA only the 980TI gets utilized. The 1060 gets this error:

Error: V-Ray : Error 2 while intializing context for device GeForce GTX 1060 6GB! Device will not be used for rendering!

When I enable just the gtx 1060 alone it works fine for Vray RT. The same with the 980TI. Only when I check both for CUDA will I get the above error.

    Any ideas?

    thanks

    Julian

Try reinstalling the driver and restarting the machine. Sometimes windows update messes the drivers.

Hello Blago! Thanks for the response. I just tried your suggestion and the error is now gone. However , when I run the IPR or render in GPU (CUDA) only 1 gpu shows usage. Using the Select device tool, if I just select ONE of them it works but when I have both GTX 1060 and the GTX 980 Ti selected only the GTX 980 Ti shows usage via the msi afterburner and HW Monitor. Any other ideas on why I cant get both GPU to be used at the same time?

      thanks again Julian

We show in this window whatever the OS reports for available GPUs. I think the driver issues on your side are not completely solved.

          Hello Blago

I re-installed the updated drivers for My GPUs and restarted the PC. Not quite sure what you meant by the OS reports. I have attached a screenshot showing the GPUs selected and MSI afterburner showing only Usage in GPU2 which is the 980 ti Does that help?

As for driver issues are you suggesting I should try previous versions of Nvidia drivers? Any other ideas as im not suire what else to try other than previous versions of Drivers

          thanks

Can you show a bit more of the command-line log for V-Ray RT? It does seem like it may be picking up just one device, but it's a bit hard to tell just from those few lines.

            Best regards,
            Vlado

                Hi Julian,

The logs show that your 1060 was unable to be initialized for V-Ray and therefore it cannot be used for rendering. This is the response we get from the GPU driver, so it points towards a driver issue.
Could you try uninstalling your NVidia driver with this tool:
                http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/...-download.html
                And then install it fresh?

Also, you are not the first one to report problems while using Driver 397.93. Could you please try installing an older driver? 388.XX has proven to be the most stable driver for the past few months

Hello Alexander! So using your suggested tool and re-installing the 397.93 driver the same problem occurred. So then uninstalled again and used the nvidia 388 driver you suggested and now Vray RT (CUDA) recognizes both GPU and all is good. So for now I will continue to use the 388.XX driver. Thanks again very MUCH to all you for your help!!!
