  • Toon mtl for GPU

    The new toon material looks quite cool.
    When will it be available for GPU?
    And why, if I may ask, didnt you develop it for CPU and GPU simultaneously? I am a little bumped that I have to wait to use it with in my pipeline.. But no hard feelings

    Although the question was answered in a private message, I'm leaving an answer here as well for anyone else wondering.
    We normally try to implement all of our new features for CPU and GPU simultaneously.
    The toon shader is an exception, mainly because it's a feature that isn't physically based.
    Nowadays our GPU architecture is a lot more flexible and toon on GPU is definitely something we consider doing, however we can't commit to an ETA.

      manuel It is quite fast to render on CPU in my testing
      I'm getting around 3-4 minutes render time in 4k, so I don't mind if it is doesn't work on GPU
      There haven't been a case where it was a problem really
      The GPU team is working on RTX and out of core Textures/Geometry, once this is out we can probably fluid this forum with requests again lol
      In my view something like scatter volume material is probably more important compared to toon shader, you cannot achieve the same result on GPU with either Fast SSS2 or Alsurface
      And it takes a lot of time to render... it is one of few things I roll back to CPU for

        Sure, I agree that there are more important things to implement than toon, as you mention RX, out of core and scatter volume and other shaders. But I learned, it is better to ask for something than to just wait, especially about a new feature Now Chaos knows that there is interest in something that they didnt implement yet.
        If there would be a road map, I wouldnt need to do so unless I disagree about it and want it to be done quicker.
        But that is apparently not how things work at Chaos.
