  • VrayZdepth render element on black insted of white?

    Hi
I would wish the Zdepth element using RT had a black background instead of white, like it is using the "standard" Vray renderer. I comp in Nuke and there is a workaround, but it' would be nice if that render element looked the same.

    Regards,
    Thomas Nissen

    Which V-Ray version is that?
The latest 3.00.08 gives the same ZDepth information in both RT(cpu/cuda) and ADV renders.

It's the latest for Max. Something about the output is also strange. Wire color doesn't work, I haven't checked if it's supposed to in VrayRT, the VrayAlpha is actually a zdepthpass, not an alpha. A Vrayzdepthpass with antialiasing doesn't output. In Nuke, zdepthfocus works best if the zdepthlayer is not antialiased.

Maybe you could check out my max-file. I have checked it and can't find anything wrong.

That is strange - I got the correct result here with 3.00.08:

Would you please clarify the exact V-Ray version you are using?

I have missed the second ZDepth Pass with no AA - this pass has white background indeed.
This is actually a bug which also persists in the ADV renderer and it has been already reported into our bug-tracking system.
I'll let you know when we have some updates on that regard.

WireColor Render Element is not supported yet.
Alpha channel also seems to work fine here:

Ok, it seems like there is more than one problem. One thing is the white background on the zdepth pass without alpha. Already reported you write, good - looking forward to a cure . Never had an issue with this in the Adv render.
Another thing is that the layer names in the .exr get mixed up, so the zdepth pass with AA is called the alpha layer. Don't know why.

From your pictures I can see we get the same results, I also use 3.00.08. If you write an exr, you will probably also see the layer name mixup.

It's this AA off that is causing it. An alpha pass with no AA is not possible either.

Which picture from the ones I posted shows mixed up channels?
Can you give us a step-by-step guide how to reproduce the mixed up channels issue here?
Can you send us an *.exr file which contains the issue?

Your picture in reply #5 shows the zdepth pass with AA. In the exr this layer is called VrayAlpha. I would expect an alpha pass to be solid, not in gray-tones. EXR is here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...boned-pipe.exr
It's generated by the max-file in the RARpackage from earlier.

                      Hi,

It is a bug. The V-Ray Alpha element takes the information from the element positioned right after it in the render element queue.
For this case it takes the ZDepth pass.

To workaround it, you could render and save your images via our VFB instead. The problem occurs only when the native 3DS Max FB is used.
Another solution for now is to replace the alpha with a Multimatte render element, which could be also used later in post to create masks.
