  • Bump map causes harsh cutoff line

    Hey Ivaylo,
I have a quick question here: We commonly use the VrayScannedMtl in a BumpMtl to give certain scans a different appearance. However, we do get very harsh cutoff lines (shadow terminator is the correct term I believe). A simple VrMtl with the same bump map looks better. I know there were some fixes made to one of the last releases in that regards, can this be done to the VrayScannedMtl as well?

You mean the shadow terminator is sharp only with bumped material, but if the same "naked" material is placed over a curved geometry the terminator is OK?
Sounds strange, i will investigate it

Yes, exactly. The shadow terminator in the ScannedMtl alone looks fine. The harsh cutoff only show up when it is bumped via BumpMtl. If you need a scene, tell me.

Can't reproduce the problem, could you attach a scene (if possible, max2017 format)?
Few months ago some issues related to VRayBumpMtl were fixed, it may be related to this fix, so it's possible that since the end of october the bug is resolved.

Scene file is sent to you, Ivaylo.
Simply set the bump amount to 0 and the strong terminator should go away.

Maybe the filter has an issue with our links to the FTP server.

No, it renders black, and there is message "The Object XRef file: "...\Int_Sportback_v01.max" can not be found". Is it the object that is rendered?

No. The Xref message is because of some helper object in the scene. You need to have bercon noise installed, but it happens with any map inside the BumpMtl.

There are no other messages for missing components. Btw, i can't see the geometry in the viewport, would you tell me the name of the object, to check in the object list?

Indeed, the missing Xref was the cause. I sent a new file to you via Mail.
