  • How does using Vrscans work?

I'm after some really nice leather materials for some chairs and came across vrscans. How exactly does it work? Is it a plugin for vray? An additional license on the dongle? or simply a material library that you get? Just curious to know how to use it.

    Thanks.

vray includes the vrscans plugin, and it is rendering with a thin watermark if you have no license. of course when you are asking for the library you can also ask for evaluation license, if you want to render without watermark
the last official 3dmax vray is not able to render the library materials, because at this time we still had no library licensing, i mean it's not able to render them at all, not just with watermark. so, if you are using 3d max, you need nightly build or just wait for the next official sp, i think there is one planed for soon

apparently my info is not up to date, the last max release is supporting the library licensing, so no need for nightlies

        Hi David,

We will be happy to provide one-month evaluation licenses where you can download prescanned materials from the library and have hands on the technology. Just mail to us your WBC file from theV-Ray dongle - vrscans@chaosgroup.com. We are also providing and a custom scanning service, i.e. you can send us physical samples and we will scan them for you.

Thanks. I just sent over my info to Gavril. My client sends sheets of their laminate material to an outfit who has a large format scanner. They are all wood-grained laminates and are 48" x 72" @72 dpi. I use them on all of their furniture products. It works reasonably well, but it seems like we're always battling realistic results with some of the wood surfaces. Does your scanning service handle such large materials?

            Hi David,

Let me post here the material sample requirements:
            - Flat opaque material samples are optimal
            - Texture depth ≤ 1mm
            - Samples no smaller than 20x20mm and no larger than 200x200mm
            - Maximum scan resolution is .06mm/ pixel.

Our scanner can host physical samples not bigger than 400x400 mm. Fortunately, this is the limitation of the current hardware setup and not the technology. We are working now to double the size of the scanning area.

48 x 72'' is too large for direct scan, we are able to scan up to 15'' , but still have a "cheat" in our tools, that works for materials with isotropic brdf. we can add underlying diffuse texture with arbitrary large size, this is not proper technique for natural wood, but is very good for all the artificial woods, because their patterns are just a paint. the real wood is anisotropic and the patterns have complex micro structures
