  • Glossiness parameter for Clearcoat

    Hey guys,
would it be possible to introduce a glossiness parameter in addition to the ones that are already there (strength, IOR, coloring, bump amount)? That way, any scanned high-gloss carpaint or wood finish could be turned into a matted version. Would be great, what do you guys think?

I was considering this option recently, of course we have it internally, but is not accessible in the UI. OK, you have it

Oh, okay. Is it something that could be accessed via MaxScript command already? I have materials where this could be really handy right now.
Also, while we are at it: Can the noise for the clearcoat be scaled independently from the underlaying material? Sometimes it us useful to adjust the size of the noise without affacting the texture of the base.

Unfortunatelly it's not accessible via script.
About the cc noise - it's doable, except the case when internal displacement map (height map) is present in the material.

Okay, thanks. Looking forward to the new options!
What do you reckon, might this be ready for the next service pack for V-Ray 5?

Not sure, as i know the code is already branched so perhaps we are late. But there are regular updates, this or the next one, it's not a big difference

Oh, okay. I thought maybe the feature could make it into the upcoming release.

Another question regarding matte clear coats: When a sample with matte clear coat is scanned, do the VrScans take the variying glossiness values into account? I have a sample here, which is quite matte when directly viewed frontally, but as soon as you tilt the tile and you are viewing it in a very shallow angle, the matte coat is almost mirror-like.

Yes, this is a well known behavior of many materials (actually in almost every existing material, even the paper). We have internal parameter called "glossy variation" that is responsible to describe this behavior.

Okay, great. Maybe we have some samples like these coming up to scan.

                      Hi,
the glossiness parameter did not find its way into the official builds yet, right?

Yes, the sources for the 5.1 release were decoupled from the master code base before your request, and introducing new features in the stable branches is not recommended, they are only for bugfixes. If this may help you, i can send you a binary able to tweak the vrscan file
