AMD threadripper 2990wx with 3dsmax and vray = super slow UI

Hi guys. I think windows 10 was okay, I can’t actually remember but I think since upgrading to windows 11 3dsmax has been running super slow and seems to get worse over time. I have 256gb ram, AMD threadripper 2990wx on a Prime x399 motherboard, a 4090 GPU. It takes literally 20 seconds for the vray render dialogue to appear and other windows and actions take ages. I’m currently contracting and using a remote machine and the speed of the UI on that machine is super fast. I’ve read it may be to do with the AMD 2990wx. I have coprio running and have tried all sorts of bios settings but with no luck. I know for sure it wasn’t always like this.

Does anyone have any ideas what I can do other than buying a new rig?

Hi Steve!

It is about time to upgrade your workstation.. The Threadripper 2990wx is shwoing its age now, with over 7 years of service. CPUs have improved a lot since then. The 2990wx was AMD’s first take on a high-core count CPU(more than 16 or 24 cores), and it didn’t go well. This CPU has way too many issues including the bad single Threaded performance you mentioned. 3Ds Max relies heavily on single-threaded performance including the viewport. If you compare the 2990wx to the new Ryzen 9 9950X, the later has nearly 3 times better single-threaded perormance, and most importantly 2x better performance in V-Ray rendering. You need to consider that the 9950X has only 16 cores, compared to the 2990wx which has 32 cores, yet the 9950x is over 2x faster in V-Ray rendering - which tells you how much better the current hardware is.
About Windows 10, it loses security updates in a couple of months. Everyone needs to move to Windows 11 eventually to get access to Microsoft security updates.

While it is not really normal for the V-Ray menu to take 10 seconds to open, the 2990wx has many issues with longivity. If you dont’ want to upgrade you need to test the V-Ray benchmark and keep an eye on Temperatures. This could be related to the bad perforamnce.

Hi Muhammed,

Thanks for the response. Yes, I probably do need to update my workstation. I was thinking the same. I think I may go for the 9970x or 9980x cpu as these are more dedicated cpus for 3d applications and rendering. My older 2990wx would become just a render. Appreciate the advice. Take care

Steve

The 9970x and 9980x are great! should be much better than the 2990wx
That being said, mainstream consumer CPUs like the 9950x are perfectly fine for rendering. They come at a much cheaper price and could equip memory up to 192 GB per machine. They pretty good value for the money

Muhammed

I had 2990WX for 5 or maybe 6 years without any problems with 3ds max. UI is slow probably because something else.

I used to have it as well for 2 years, when it works fine it is ok but many times I run into issues. By far the worst platform I ran in my life, I don’t miss it

Muhammed

what issues? I never had a problem with this platform and Max and VRay. And I sell it to another graphic 3D artist and no problems so far as I know.

My 7980X is 4 times (!!) faster than 2990WX. 9980X is even little bit faster than that.
