Autoback

Isn’t working. I set my project folder using → manage → set project folder, if that matters.

Are you using a mix of 2016 and 2015?
Check your user paths to see if it is actually changing as per your project folder.
Customize > Configure user Paths
Check if Autobackup is set to “./autobackup”

That is suppose to make a folder called “autobackup” inside your project folder.

Either way, the scripter in me prefers doing it with ini files etc.
So, check your 3dsmax.ini (in c drive users > appdata > local > auitodesk > 3dsmax > version > ENU)
file to make sure that it is set correctly, namely “AutoBackup=.\autoback”

The easiest however is to edit the .MXP file in your project folder with a text editor. In there will be the “correct” backup folder. If it refers to the wrong path, correct it here, save the file. Create the folder in your project folder if it wasnt created. Re-open max and your project and see if that helps

Everything looks good. I turned on incremental backup, just in case.
